Patriots, Packers Dominate Selections For NFL 101 Awards Recognizing Top Players & Coaches of 2007
28-Jan-2008, Kansas City Chiefs
"Six high-achieving players and coaches who made the 2007 National Football League season one of the most memorable in years were announced today as winners of the annual NFL 101 Awards – the nation's only awards event dedicated exclusively to professional football. The group of honorees is headlined by the New England Patriots and Green Bay Packers, both of which landed their head coach and quarterback on the list of honorees. Bill Belichick earned AFC Coach of the Year and record-setting QB Tom Brady was selected as AFC Offensive Player of the Year."

2007 PFW/PFWA Awards: Coach of the Year
15-Jan-2008, Pro Football Weekly
"The Patriots disposed of their adversary in each successive game, winning all but four by at least a 10-point buffer, en route to the NFL's first 16-0 regular season. It was just the fourth unblemished campaign in league history, and the first since Don Shula's Dolphins went 14-0 in 1972. In a league that prides itself on fostering competitive balance, the Patriots had overthrown the establishment. And as far as Pro Football Weekly and the Pro Football Writers of America are concerned, Belichick's accomplishment was far too impressive to bestow Coach of the Year honors on anybody else. It's the second time he has won the award, with his first coming in 2003."

"Special Awards: Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year offer no surprises, Belichick has to be our coach. Too often do you see some guy who raised a team from 2-14 to playoff level get the honor, only to exit quickly in the postseason while the Super Bowl winner gets to be determined after the award is given. Finally a special award: Assistant Coach of the Year: If you wonder why Brady has so much time to pass, please give some credit to the guy who has turned the O-line into such a beautifully synchronized unit, and that's Dante Scarnecchia."

"Coach of the year: Bill Belichick, New England. Belichick put together the finest season in NFL history in 2007, posting the first 16-0 season and first perfect regular season in 35 years. He also put together the NFL's best regular-season winning streak at 19 games, dating to 2006. There is no better coach in the NFL today – maybe ever."

Belichick Crowned With USA TODAY's Top Coach Award
04-Jan-2008, USA Today
"The Patriots coach kept his team focused during its undefeated season by peeling away the layers of praise fans and media were heaping upon his players. A common sight in their locker room was white T-shirts with 'I eat it' on the front and 'Humble pie' on the back. Even after big wins, Belichick would highlight areas of improvement for the Patriots. Yet even Belichick acknowledged pride after the Patriots bookended their perfect regular season with a 38-35 win against the N.Y. Giants at Giants Stadium, the site of Spygate in Week 1. 'You work all year to try and win every game,' he said, 'and to win them all is great.'"

Reaction to Bill Belichick being named AP Coach of the Year
04-Jan-2008, New England Patriots

Mike Vrabel: "I'm happy for Bill. It's {an} award that comes from everybody playing well, the team playing well {and having} success. You start to see a lot of that come from the team having success. You see a lot of individual honors."
Rodney Harrison: "Much deserved. The guy puts a lot of time and effort in, he sacrifices a lot {and} he works extremely hard. It's definitely well deserved. To be able to bring a group of guys together and keep them focused for 16 weeks just shows what type of leader he is. He's a tremendous leader, just the best coach I've ever been involved with." {If it's vindication} "I know that he's a tremendous coach and he's been that way. You look at his resume and everything that he's accomplished and what he's done over his career. Nothing can take away from that. I think the fact that he keeps us so focused and he's able to keep us humble and keep us on the right path, it just shows what type of - not only what type of coach that he is but what type of person that he is. That means a lot to us."
Adalius Thomas: "It's a great accomplishment for him. I'm happy for him, proud of him." {What he's learned from him} "I've learned a lot. Coming here, I wasn't used to having a defensive head coach that spent time with the players. That's something that was new to me so I definitely learned a lot from him, countless things. You can't name just one thing, but he's definitely helped me a lot each game."
Brandon Meriweather: "He deserves it. He's a great coach. He's one of the best coaches I've ever been around. He deserves it." {What he's learned from him} "I can't even explain all of the ways. He's done a lot for me. We meet a lot actually. We go over a lot of things that I need, the things that {they} already know as vets – things to look for, keys to look for, all the little things that I just don't know because I'm a rookie. He's helped me out with them."
full quotes

Bill Belichick: "First of all, I want to acknowledge the Coach of the Year {award} yesterday from the AP. It's certainly an honor and something I appreciate. I think there are a lot of great coaches in this league; I think there are some guys that have done really fantastic jobs with their team, so it's really an honor to be selected. At the same time, I think it's much more a team award than an individual award, based on the success of our team and the players and what they've done. And certainly the assistant coaches, because they're the ones that do most of the coaching and most of the preparation, so I think, really, they deserve a lot more credit for that than I do. It's certainly an honor to be recognized like that, but I think most of the credit needs to go to the players and the team for winning, and for the assistant coaches for the job that they did."

Bill Belichick Named AP Coach Of The Year
03-Jan-2008, Associated Press
"New England's undefeated season now includes yet another achievement: Bill Belichick is The Associated Press 2007 NFL Coach of the Year. … 'This is definitely a team recognition, but one that I appreciate very much on a personal level,' Belichick said in a statement issued by the club. He also won the award in 2003. 'If anyone is deserving of such an award it really is Bill,' Patriots owner Robert Kraft said. 'I know the energy and effort and planning and time (he puts in). He's had his foot on the pedal all year, just working so hard and always doing everything he can to put the team in a position to win first.'"

  They Said It
03-Jan-2008, Boston Herald
"Here is a sample of some of the comments voiced by voters for Coach of the Year in regard to Bill Belichick: … 'I think 16-0 stands for itself. Regardless of what anyone says about Spy-gate, it had no influence whatsoever on the season. In my estimation, he is not only the best coach this year, he's been the best coach the last five years … I would be surprised if he didn't win. It would show to me people don't like him. What he accomplished this year is the single greatest regular season in NFL history.' – Boomer Esiason, CBS Sports."

  And The Winner Is ...
01-Jan-2008, FOXSports.com
"Coach of the Year: Bill Belichick, New England. He masterminded the most impressive regular season in NFL history. But a 16-0 record isn't the only thing that sets New England apart. The Patriots play smarter than any other team and never beat themselves. No other squad changes its schemes and personnel as much on a game-to-game basis without a drop-off. Injuries are never an excuse because New England's substitutes are so well prepared. If you owned a team, which coach would you rather have on the sideline entering the playoffs?"

30-Dec-2007, SI.com
"Awards – Coach: Bill Belichick, New England. The toughest call I had to make, and I empathize with those who say they can't vote a man coach of the year who was sanctioned more harshly than any coach in NFL history. I gave long and hard consideration to Mike McCarthy of Green Bay, because the Pack vastly overachieved with his steady and smart leadership. But it came down to this: Did the Patriots gain an advantage this year because of Belichick's apparent history of authorizing the taping of defensive signals by the other team's coaches? I think the advantage, at best, was infinitesimal. Whereas the edge gained by Shawne Merriman for using illegal performance-enhancing substances can lead to a tangible advantage for a team, I don't think the taping of defensive signals for a few minutes in the opening game of the season compares. And the accomplishment of this team, and its head coach, are too overwhelming to overlook."

  Bring Out The Brooms
27-Dec-2007, Rockford Register Star
"The New England Patriots, after beating the New York Giants 27-17 Saturday night, will have swept all 16 regular-season foes. That will be just the start. Look for them to sweep all the major honors. MVP – Tom Brady. Brett Favre lost any argument, and votes, last week against Chicago. Coach of the Year – Bill Belichick. For Green Bay's Mike McCarthy's chances, see above. General Manager of the Year – Scott Pioli. This is the easiest vote ever. Anyone who can add wideouts Randy Moss, Donte Stallworth, Wes Welker and linebacker Adalius Thomas all in one offseason should probably go right into the Hall of Fame."

Deserving of Award: Belichick the league's best for keeping team in contention
31-Dec-2005, Pro Football Weekly
"This is the time of year when accolades are handed out, and two of the biggest are the league's Most Valuable Player and the Coach of the Year awards. Let others debate the former, but the latter seems clear to me, although perhaps unlikely to others. The coach who did the best job under the most adverse conditions in 2005 is Bill Belichick, regardless of whether or not his New England Patriots successfully defend their Super Bowl title for the third straight time."

These Six Coaches Deserve Their Props
30-Dec-2005, FOXSports.com
3. Bill Belichick, Patriots: "Perhaps the best coaching job he has ever done. The Patriots are playing so well right now they are considered one of the hottest and most feared teams to face heading into playoff time. Consider the limitations the Patriots had to fight through this season: they lost a man who has since turned into a star in offensive coordinator Charlie Weis, a defensive coordinator who has proven he can coach with the big boys in Romeo Crennel, their defensive leader and spirit of the team, Rodney Harrison. Their other inspirational defensive leader Tedy Bruschi and perhaps their best overall player Richard Seymour have missed significant portions of this season. So has their Pro Bowl running back Corey Dillon, who has been banged up most of the year running behind and offensive line who, like the aforementioned walking wounded, has also been decimated by the injury bug. Belichick has taken over offensive coordinator duties and the defense is run by a very reliable albeit first-year coordinator Eric Mangini. Despite all these losses, New England still managed to rip through the Bucs two weeks ago and everyone else recently for that matter. Wow, what a job. Just about every other coach in the NFL would have watched his team fold under such adversity and with the loss of so much."

Analyze This: Coach of the Year
29-Dec-2005, NFL.com
Pat Kirwan: "It is always hard to pick one coach from the 32 men working themselves to the bone trying to scratch out enough victories to make the playoffs. … Bill Belichick lost both of his coordinators and so many starters to injury that most coaches in his situation would have folded up the tent and gone home for the year. He might be completing one of his best coaching jobs of his career."

Banks' Shots: Year-End Awards
03-Jan-2005, SI.com
"Coach of the Year: Bill Belichick, New England – I said it at midseason, and I'll say it again: We usually over-think this award, and believe it has to go to the coach whose club showed the biggest improvement (such as San Diego's Marty Schottenheimer). But to ignore the job turned in this year by Belichick – who week in and week out was head and shoulders better than his peers – would be a crime. The Patriots dealt with The Streak, every opponent's A game, and an injury-decimated secondary, and still went 14-2. Until further notice, this award belongs to Belichick."

Football Digest's 2003 NFL Awards: Coach of the Year
22-Mar-2004, Football Digest
"Belichick's Patriots began the season with a humiliating 31-0 loss to the Buffalo Bills just days after cutting team leader Lawyer Milloy. But that ignominious beginning was a distant memory by season's end. The Patriots closed out the schedule with 12 consecutive victories to finish 14-2 and earn the top seed in the AFC. For his efforts as a master strategist and motivator, Belichick is FOOTBALL DIGEST's 2003 Coach of the Year."

Bill Belichick: Patriots – Coach of the Year
24-Jan-2004, Sporting News
"The best teams usually are the healthiest teams, but that was not the case with the Patriots this season. New England's starters missed 103 games because of injuries, and the team was forced to start 42 players. The Patriots also did not have a pass rusher among the top 15 in sacks, a running back among the top 29 rushers or a receiver among the top 41 in receiving yards. Yet they finished the regular season as the best team in the NFL, a product of exemplary coaching. New England was managed so well that Bill Belichick was a runaway winner of the SPORTING NEWS Coach of the Year award in voting by head coaches."

Bill Belichick Named 2003 AP NFL Coach of the Year
03-Jan-2004, Associated Press
"Bill Belichick owns a Super Bowl title and Saturday, after his best coaching job, he won The Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year. In a year of masterful coaching throughout the league, Belichick led the New England Patriots to the NFL's best record, 14-2. The Patriots, fighting off injuries almost from the outset of the schedule, won their final 12 games, setting franchise records for winning streak and victories in one year. They did so in great part because of Belichick's brilliance as a game-planner, motivator and in-game strategist."

"Coach: (tie) Belichick, New England; Parcells, Dallas … Parcells took a team that was 5-11 in each of the last three seasons to 10-6 and the playoffs by also changing a mentality. And Belichick might have done one of the great coaching jobs in NFL history, shuttling the second-most players in the league (64) in and out of the lineup for the final three months of the season … and never losing. How about going 12-0 in October, November and December without having a set lineup?"

Belichick Deserves Credit For Turnaround
21-Jan-2002, Sporting News
"In January of 2000, I was critical of the Patriots' decision to hire Bill Belichick, who was a bust in Cleveland. I wrote: It is possible he has learned from mistakes and is a different coach, but it's also possible that a pig will learn to use silverware. Well, Babe is spooling linguini. And I'm eating crow. Belichick's performance this season truly has been one of the most remarkable coaching jobs I have witnessed. The same life he sucked from the Browns, he breathed into the Patriots."

"Coach of the Year: Bill Belichick, Patriots. The Super Bowl-winning coach seldom gets this award because it comes out before the game has been played. So you look at who has brought his team the farthest. That would mean Belichick and the Bears' Dick Jauron, with a nod to the Niners' Steve Mariucci. What I admire about the job Belichick and his staff have done, though, is the way you saw players develop from game to game. An almost forgotten part of coaching is teaching and no staff did it better."
