Jim Brown to Sports Illustrated, Apr. 15, 2002: "Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots has
contributed more to the work I surround myself with than any black athlete
in modern times – financially, intellectually, every way. He's been in the
prisons with me. He's met gang members in my home; he's met gang members
in Cleveland [where Belichick coached the Browns form 1991 to '95]. He's
put up money. He's opened up areas of education for us very quietly and
very strongly. Imagine what would happen if Michael Jordan did the same
thing."

Bill Belichick and Jon Gruden were the featured speakers at this year's annual Florida Gators coaching clinic April 17-18. Michael Lombardi's "Sunday At The Post" column has a complete outline of Belichick's notes from the clinic: "Get people in your program that you can trust. … Have a strong core. … Coach the team every week. … There is no I in Team. … Always start with special teams. … Uses plays to show his players – your team, other teams. … Expect and Demand. … Emphasizing Fundamentals. … The Patriots do not beat themselves. … Your team has to be adaptable. … When putting in a play he asks these two questions…"

The Man Behind The Myth
08-Apr-2009, NESN
"Speaking last week at a benefit supporting financial aid for Wesleyan, his alma mater, Belichick showed a side of himself that football fans rarely see. He was engaging, philosophical and humorous during his time on stage with the school president. Belichick captivated the audience with jokes, recalled his musical tastes in college (Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead and Steve Miller Band) and shared memories of playing lacrosse under coach Terry Jackson, whom Belichick regards as one of the most influential coaches in his career. At the end of the night, Belichick had a scholarship created in his name and sang the Wesleyan fight song. … More than anything, moments like this appearance humanize Belichick."

Belichick Celebrates Wesleyan Scholarship
06-Apr-2009, Wesleyan University
"Wesleyan hosted Bill Belichick '75, P'07 at a sold out benefit for student financial aid in Cambridge, MA. President Michael S. Roth '78 engaged the Wesleyan alumnus and Head Coach of the NFL Super Bowl Champion New England Patriots in a wide-ranging conversation that focused on excellence in life, higher education, career, and sports. Seated on stage before an audience of more than 400 alumni, parents, friends and fans, the two men engaged one another and the audience for nearly an hour of dialog, questions and answers, and occasional good-natured jibes. Both men clearly enjoyed the hour of give-and-take, comparing the challenges of leading a championship NFL franchise to leading Wesleyan, managing great athletes to managing academic high achievers."

Belichick, Leyland Finally Meet
10-Mar-2009, MLB.com "Boy, it sure would've been nice to be a fly on the wall at The Capital Grille in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., on Monday night. That's where Tigers manager Jim Leyland, along with Cardinals skipper Tony La Russa, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and Hall of Fame closer Dennis Eckersley all sat together in what seemed like a roundtable discussion between some of the most historic winners in sports (together, they share seven championships). But although Leyland and La Russa go way back, Detroit's skipper found himself spending most of his time talking to Belichick. Leyland said the two had spoken many times on the phone, but never had a chance to meet – until Monday. … [Leyland said of Belichick:] 'He's a brilliant guy and so down-to-Earth. I couldn't have been more impressed. I was waiting for that day, to be honest with you. … He's always been an interesting guy.'"

Belichick Gives Rutgers Some Advice: Schiano invites Patriots' coach to address his slumping team
23-Oct-2008, Daily Record
"The coach walked into the Rutgers football team's meeting room to the surprise of everyone, looking no different than he does on Sunday afternoons. Bill Belichick had the same mannerisms, the same no-nonsense scowl – even the same New England Patriots hooded sweatshirt – when he addressed the Scarlet Knights prior to the Morgan State game last month. Though Rutgers coach Greg Schiano routinely invites guest speaker to address his team, this pep talk was different. 'He shot us straight,' nose tackle Pete Tverdov said. 'He didn't beat around the bush or tell us things we may have wanted to hear. Guys needed to hear that.'"

Instead of breaking down film of his team's next opponent, the San Francisco 49ers, Belichick was speaking to more than 100 local children about the new Universal film they were about to watch, The Express. … Dressed in a tan suit, blue shirt, and bright red tie with soccer balls, footballs, and baseballs on it, Belichick told the youngsters the film had a powerful message they shouldn't forget."

Students See Coach's Jovial Side
01-Oct-2008, Sun Chronicle
"It was awesome!" fifth-grader Caitlin Driscoll said. "He was very nice." "The movie doesn't arrive in theaters until Oct. 10, but students from several area Boys & Girls Clubs and the Ahern Middle School in Foxboro got a sneak peek at the Showcase Cinema De Lux at Patriot Place, along with free snacks and a little chat with Belichick before the show. Appearing in a suit and tie, Belichick wasn't exactly dressed like a rock star, but he was greeted like one as students cheered and stretched for high-fives from the coach as he made his way in. Often terse and unamused in news conferences, Belichick was especially jovial with the students, making a strong case that if he ever decides to give up coaching, he could have a winning career as a teacher. Belichick quizzed the youngsters on the particulars of Davis' abbreviated football career – calling out questions and picking students from the crowd to answer."

Syracuse Thwarts Hopkins
27-May-2008, The Capital
"New England Patriots head coach and Annapolis native Bill Belichick was on hand yesterday afternoon to watch the Division I men's lacrosse final at Gillette Stadium. Belichick, who visited Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium last weekend to watch Hopkins dispose of Navy in the quarterfinals, has developed a close relationship with Hopkins head coach Dave Pietramala over the past few years. 'We learn a lot from each other,' said the three-time Super Bowl champion coach. 'We go back and forth about motivation and how to handle certain situations. With lacrosse, it's less about the X's and O's and more about how to manage a team. When it comes to football, that translates pretty well.' Belichick attended both of Hopkins' Foxborough games over Memorial Day Weekend, greeting Pietramala on the field before the championship game. 'When its lacrosse season, we talk lacrosse and when its football season, we talk football,' Belichick said. 'Right now, its all about lacrosse.'"

Belichick Commends Cats' Leader
25-May-2008, Chicago Tribune
"She was looking for advice from someone she admired for a work ethic similar to hers, someone who had been able to convince players that yet another title was worth all the effort required to win it. Scott Hiller, the Wildcats' volunteer assistant coach, suggested his wife call Bill Belichick. … 'Anyone who follows lacrosse in this country knows who Kelly [Amonte Hiller] is,' Belichick said in an e-mail to the Tribune. 'She is a legend. Anyone would take her record.' She wanted to talk about two of Belichick's favorite topics: lacrosse and repeating as a champion. 'A lot of people have talked about our team being a dynasty, and the Patriots have won so much, I felt he could relate to where we are,' Amonte Hiller said. 'So I called the Patriots. But I never thought he would call me back.' Within a few hours, he did."

The Thrill of Bill: Huge Salem State crowd turns out to cheer Belichick

Coach Belichick Speaks To USA Football's New England Coaching Camp
07-May-2008, Patriots Today
"To continue the close connection between the Patriots and the community of New England, head coach Bill Belichick surprised a full house of coaches from around the region attending USA Football's Coaching Camp at Gillette Stadium. 'More than anything, I just want to tell you how much I respect the job that you do. Nobody knows more than I do how much a high school coach means to a player.' After a morning practice with the young rookies attending Patriots minicamp, Belichick relayed his experience on the field to the group of youth coaches, explaining his main philosophy on working with new and young players. 'We just really try to lay out what we expect from the player, and that's something that's really been my overall philosophy as a coach. … When people ask me, What do you believe in, how do you try to coach your team, that's what I would say it is.' As the head coach prepares for the Patriots' 2008 season, he also had some final words of encouragement for the youth coaches as they prepare for their upcoming season. 'There's usually two people that influence their life the most: one of their parents and their high school coach.'"

Local Coaches Benefit From Belichick's Visit To Coaching Clinic
05-Apr-2008, Tuscaloosa News
"Robert Higginbotham, who played football for coach Paul W. 'Bear' Bryant at the University of Alabama, has coached high school football for more than 30 years. Melvin Pete coached the Central Falcons to a 15-0 record and the AHSAA Class 4A championship last season. Both said they believe they can become better at their jobs by learning from one of the best – and most high-profile – coaches in the profession. Bill Belichick, who has directed the New England Patriots to three Super Bowl titles since 2001, spoke on Friday at the University of Alabama's coaching clinic, with more than 1,000 high school coaches on hand to soak in his wisdom. Belichick was the headliner in a star-studded line up of guest speakers who brought VIP status to the Crimson Tide's annual clinic."

2008 Alabama Coaching Clinic
04-Apr-2008, Tuscaloosa News
Nick Saban, introducing Bill Belichick: "The success that this man has had, whether it was being the defensive coordinator for the New York Giants or the Jets, and what he's accomplished – what he did in Cleveland, which goes unnoticed, because we took the worst team in the NFL and made it a playoff team – also the championships that he's won in New England. But most importantly the consistency that his teams have been able to play with – to win 18 straight games this year – even though they didn't win the Super Bowl, win the championships that he's been able to win. But even in the years when they didn't, they had a tremendous amount of success. I think consistency and performance is probably the number one thing to determine success for all of us, and there's not been anybody that I know or that I have any relationships with that has done a better job of that than my good friend Bill Belichick, probably the best mentor that I have in this world relative to how they've helped me professionally as a person, how to evaluate talent, how to coach people, how to teach. I'll always be indebted to him for that and I hope that you all will enjoy him today."

Jays Have Big Fan in Pats' Belichick
02-Mar-2008, Baltimore Sun
"[Y]es, that was New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick on the Johns Hopkins sideline yesterday at the Face-Off Classic, attempting to look anonymous in a black Blue Jays hoodie sweatshirt and a head warmer. Belichick, who grew up in Annapolis and is a big lacrosse fan, was a guest of Hopkins coach Dave Pietramala. The coaches have become friends in recent years, and Belichick pulled aside Blue Jays midfielder Paul Rabil last week for a pep talk on leadership. 'What can you say? The man is a winner and he's been a champion at the highest level,' Pietramala said. 'He's been awful nice to allow our staff to take a peek inside his house. He was here today as a friend, as a fan and as a supporter of lacrosse. When you're around [somebody] like that, you can't not draw from his experience. You hope if you touch him enough, maybe some of it will rub off on you.'"

Connections That Go Far Beyond Wins
29-Jan-2008, New York Times
"The enduring connection between [Jim] Brown and Belichick has been Belichick's commitment to Amer-I-can. Belichick became a supporter, making donations and meeting with gang members. 'He has been face to face with my gangsters in L.A. and in Cleveland,' Brown said. 'Belichick is the only person that you would know who has been in my home with these guys. He has been in the hotel room in Cleveland with them; not only that, he's been to the graduation; not only that, he got us our first contract in Rhode Island. And not only that, when he fined his players one year, he gave all the fine money to the foundation.' Belichick didn't give a speech or a pep talk. 'He was there to lend his support and credibility and allow the gang members to meet him,' Brown said. 'What happens is that when someone like that comes into my living room and sits down with them, it makes them feel that they have support. They read about this guy and all that, they never expect him to come and sit down with us and be a regular guy.'"

Meeting A Master Mind
October 2007, Inside Lacrosse
"Over the years, whether it's through his ties with the Naval Academy, or through his daughter Amanda and son Stephen, Belichick has befriended several college lacrosse coaches. Meade welcomed him into the locker room for the '04 final four. Notre Dame's Kevin Corrigan got him to speak at the 2006 NCAA All-American banquet. Delaware's Bob Shillinglaw played against him in high school and maintains sporadic contact. And Rutgers' Jim Stagnitta has gotten to know him well through recruiting Stephen. Belichick invited Stagnitta and his family to New England for the Patriots game against the Bears last season. They stayed in the same hotel and even attended the team dinner. 'I have a 10-year-old son and he's like a lot of 10- year-olds in that he plays sports and loves athletics,' says Stagnitta. 'So we're sitting there and my son is asking question after question and Bill is introducing him to all the players. I know how I am the night before a big game, so about an hour into dinner, I said, 'I'm gonna take [my son] out of here and get out of your hair. I'm sure your pregame regimen doesn't entail getting grilled by a 10-year-old.' And he just said, 'Jim, it'd be nice if you guys could stick around and watch the Notre Dame-USC game with us. My guys have no problems getting focused for games.' So we stayed and watched the game. It was very nice of him to do that.'"

Final Exam With Bill Belichick
October 2007, Golf Digest
Golf Digest: "Name the three courses for the AT&T at Pebble, which you played in 2005. (A: Spyglass Hill, Poppy Hills, Pebble Beach.)" Bill Belichick: "I know Pebble and Spyglass, but you'll have to give me a hint on the third. [Told Poppy Hills.] We had just won the Super Bowl, and I didn't get to play a practice round because I'd been on the Leno show. What I really enjoyed was appreciating how disciplined the pros are, how they do the same thing on every shot. There's a certain preparation when you do your job well, a consistency. That wasn't the only time I played Pebble. My son Brian and I played there the year before, along with Cypress Point. Bill Perocchi, a New Englander who runs Pebble Beach, was a gracious host, proof that New England sports ties run deep. We saw all the whales and the sea lions. It was almost like going to SeaWorld."

The Season Of Potential

"Last but not least is our man Bill Belichick. If you need to know anything more about Bill Belichick, he called to renew his own subscription last year, and he says he has to fight his kids for every copy. That's obviously not going to get just anyone a five-page feature in the magazine, but when you hear stories about a three-time Super Bowl champion head coach clearing out trees in his backyard to build a lacrosse field so he can get his fix, you need to appreciate this guy's love for the game. Belichick Enjoys His Time On New Turf 12-Mar-2007, Boston Globe
"He sat beside Terry Francona in the Red Sox
dugout, wearing shorts, not a hoodie. … Can anyone tell it's spring training? 'It was fun,'
Francona said of his time visiting with the coach of the
Patriots… 'We talked about the
culture of the game, which is interesting. Just the
different culture. They're 16 games. We're every day. We
talked about sending guys down, cuts, that type of stuff. It
was interesting. Spring training is relaxed, and he's
relaxed. It was fun. He came and sat for about three innings
and we BS'd around."

Lacrosse Gets A Visit From Patriots Coach Belichick
08-Feb-2007, Johns Hopkins News-Letter
"[Hopkins Men's Lacrosse Coach Dave] Pietramala and Belichick, both proven leaders of in their respective sports, became friends over the past year. They have stayed connected by sending e-mails on a weekly basis. Pietramala and the assistant coaches even traveled to Foxborough, Mass. and watched a few of the Patriots' practices during the lacrosse off-season.
Belichick returned the favor on Friday, observing the Hopkins lacrosse team for the duration of the day's practice, and even took part in some drills. After the practice, Belichick gave a brief locker-room pep talk, giving his thoughts on what he saw from the guys on the field."

Meeting Of The Minds: Belichick hits it off with La Russa 13-Oct-2006, Boston Globe
"The Cardinals manager and the Patriots coach truly are
a two-man admiration society. We are in the middle of the
baseball playoffs and Tony La Russa is speaking the language
of Bill. Belichick was La Russa's guest for Game 1 of the
National League Championship Series last night, a 2-0
Cardinals' loss to the New York Mets. Standing behind the
batting cage, the two gods of game-calling talked for a

Pats' Belichick Has It All In Perspective
10-Sep-2006, Providence Journal
"When Belichick was recently asked about his
good-Samaritan role, the first thing he wanted to know was if the people
were okay. 'He couldn't have been a nicer guy,' said Salisbury. This isn't
the first time Belichick has assisted someone on the highway, but don't
think he'll be working for AAA anytime soon. 'I've pulled over a couple of
times,' he said. 'But, that was the most serious looking accident that
I've seen. Luckily, they walked out of it.' Luckily, people like Salisbury
and Belichick were there to help."

Bon Jovi Tunes In To New AFL Franchise 08-Feb-2004, NBC Sports
"He got to know the Giants because he'd met and became friends with
one of their coaches when Bon Jovi was on tour with the Rolling Stones
in Europe. The coach wasn't much known outside of New York at the time,
but he grew up to be Bill Belichick, coach of the Patriots and winner of
two of the last three Super Bowls. They're friends for the most basic of
reasons. 'I like music,' says Belichick, who confesses to being 'a
closet drummer – I don't want to get up on
stage. I just beat on the drums in private to release some tension.' 'I
like football,' says Bon Jovi."
