SCOTT PIOLI Named
PERSONNEL MAN of the DECADE
ESPN.com Announces 'All-Decade Moments'
Jun. 24, 2009: "Personnel man of the decade: Indianapolis Colts president Bill Polian is ranked pretty high, but everyone you talk to across the league mentions Scott Pioli first. Now the GM for the Kansas City Chiefs, Pioli joined Bill Belichick in building the team of the decade, the New England Patriots. According to one longtime scout, 'No one in the league does a better job of scouting their own team, and Pioli was orchestrating all of that.' The Patriots have had the magic touch when it comes to reclamation projects such as Corey Dillon and Randy Moss. But much like the Baltimore Ravens, they always seem to know when it's time to say goodbye to a player. Pioli has a keen eye when it comes to projecting players in Belichick's defense. Now we'll see what he can do with the Chiefs."

Pioli Gets Chance To Succeed After Getting Out From Under Belichick's Shadow
29-Aug-2009, Kansas City Star
"The lights are dimmed as the food arrives. Scott Pioli, in blue jeans and a tight black shirt, looks at ease with himself. He leans back, Sinatra's voice humming over his own, and begins to detail how he got here – to Kansas City, to steward of the Chiefs' future, to the pressure and the limelight. 'I had met Bill (Belichick) through a friend, and that was how the whole thing started …' 'The bottom line is, if I was afraid of this job, I probably should have stayed at home …'"

Haley, Pioli Trying To Reprogram Chiefs
26-Aug-2009, Yahoo! Sports
"No matter the price, Pioli and Haley have shown their dedication to churning the roster and creating endless competition. 'A day won't go by here that Scott Pioli isn't trying to make this team better through other players,' said Chiefs linebacker Mike Vrabel, whom Pioli acquired from New England in the offseason. 'I came to expect that from eight years with the Patriots. Guys are going to come and go, and there are going to be guys constantly brought in to challenge you at your position. That's just the way it has been. … You're going to get an opportunity, and if you make the most of it, chances are you'll get a second opportunity. But if you don't, you can bet they'll be looking for somebody else.'"

Camp Sights: Pioli Rolls Up Sleeves in Kansas City
05-Aug-2009, FOX Sports
Scott Pioli: "When I said I'm not looking to become a general manager or for the next job, it was the truth. We were in a situation where we were winning. I was OK with that. This decision wasn't ego-driven. It was the right situation at the right time." Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt: "The more time I've spent with him, I've continued to feel better and better about the decision (to hire Pioli). He really understands the football business and everything that goes into building a winning team."

Chiefs Blow Up Franchise To Rebuild It
03-Aug-2009, AOL Fanhouse
"'It's broken,' says new general manager Scott Pioli, the former Patriots personnel whiz who took over this reclamation project on Jan. 13. 'We have a lot of work to do here. I'm exhausted at the end of the day, but energized when I wake up. I love what we're doing, what we're trying to build.' What he's undertaken is a demolition, from top to bottom. Pioli famously refrains from interviews, but his so-called media blackout and bunker mentality in Kansas City is more about him eschewing the personal spotlight and an intense focus on rebuilding rather than a policy shutting out reporters. 'I understand the curiosity. But I haven't done anything here yet,' he says, throwing up his hands with a laugh."

2009 NFL Draft Summary With Scott Pioli
26-Apr-2009, Kansas City Chiefs
"Just a quick recap to where we're at right now. We've still got the final pick in the draft and there is a chance we may be in this round [again]. We may try to get back in this round even before the compensatory picks. As you see we spent most of the time on defense yesterday and today on offense. Todd and I feel like we've upgraded our football team on offense, defense and special teams. Big picture we feel very good that we've improved our football team in terms of depth and competition. Again, we've added three on each side of the ball [as of this time.]"

Q&A With Scott Pioli & Todd Haley On 1st Draft Pick
25-Apr-2009, Kansas City Chiefs
Pioli: "We selected Tyson Jackson out of LSU, a defensive lineman. You'll hear him referred to as a 5-technique defensive end who we think has versatility on first and second down situations, can play outside for us, and on sub situations can play inside. He's been a very good player down there on a very successful team and a very successful defense. Todd and I spent a lot of time looking at a lot of these players at the end and we're really excited to have him."

Pioli Defends Chiefs' Strategy To Add Personnel
13-Mar-2009, Kansas City Star
"While their lack of activity hasn't pleased many Chiefs fans, general manager Scott Pioli is urging patience. He indicated the Chiefs aren't finished adding pieces. 'We're only in the beginning stages,' Pioli said. 'Player acquisition is not limited to just free-agency, and it's not just the draft. It could be waiver claims, trades, street free agents. It could be anything we see as an opportunity to help this team get better, whether that's in the locker room or on the field. We're still in the beginning phase. You can never predict what your opportunities are going to be. We'll keep at it. There are players out there that can help us.'"

Life Lessons From The New England Patriots
23-Feb-2009, Rush Limbaugh Show
"'Pioli's opinions, like Belichick's, the coach, are so clear and blunt that there's little, if any, room for misunderstandings. In fact, it is written in the Patriots' manual that all scouts must have a clear opinion on prospects. Neutrality or passive aggressiveness can get you fired. You actually get credit when you logically disagree with the boss. 'I want 'em to know their opinion is important,' says Pioli. 'As a matter of fact it's so important that part of the evaluation of you is going to be whether you have one.'' Now, this is one of the greatest indictments and this is a book, by the way, about the Patriots called 'Patriot Reign.' I'm reading from chapter 9 called 'Finding the Missing Pieces.' And this is all about people and the most important thing in their life is the job, and the people who work there had better have opinions about things, no moderate squishy-squashiness, or you don't last."

Picture Of Pioli Emerges In Bits, Pieces
24-Jan-2009, Kansas City Star
"The journey to know Pioli is not an easy one, a road made rugged as much by where he comes from as whom he's worked for. Few know him, fewer still have shared what they know with the outside world. And so, 45 miles southeast of here, in a house with wooden floors and a slice of the Hudson River shining blue through the trees, one of the people who know Pioli best struggles to explain. Even though, really, he can't. 'People knowing him would drive him crazy. No one knew very much about him in New England. He didn't want to be known. Never out front.' Matt Spencer pauses. He needs to think, to be careful. He is Pioli's best friend – his wife, Cindy, who's sitting next to him on the couch, introduced Pioli to Bill Belichick, the New England Patriots' secretive head coach who went on to incredible success and who took Pioli with him."

Herm Edwards Relieved Of Duties As Chiefs Head Coach
23-Jan-2009, Kansas City Chiefs
Scott Pioli: "Since my arrival last week, Herm and I have had several conversations as part of my overall evaluation of the football operation. After careful consideration, Clark and I felt that it was best to make a change. What I conveyed last week in the press conference I still believe to be true – Herm is a great man and a tremendous football coach. He respects the game and the league, and he is passionate about his players and his craft. Over the course of this last week, I have also spent time meeting and visiting with most of the assistant coaches, and I will continue to do so over the next several days. All of the coaches from last year's staff, with the exception of one, are under contract through the 2009 season."

Clark Hunt Introduces Scott Pioli as General Manager
14-Jan-2009, Kansas City Chiefs
"Scott joins us after nine very successful season with the Patriots, where along with coach Bill Belichick, he built three Super Bowl Champions and the only team in NFL history to go 16-0. Scott's list of NFL accolades is extremely impressive, especially considering his age; which I can say because he is a full 40 days younger than I am. He was named the Sporting News NFL Executive of the Year following the 2003 and 2004 seasons; the youngest ever to receive the award, and one of only three NFL executives in league history to win it in consecutive years. His success in the draft is well documented, most notably with (QB) Tom Brady, and more recently with Defensive Rookie of the Year (LB) Jerod Mayo. Of the 53 players on the Patriots Super Bowl XLII roster, 43 were acquired after the team's first championship in 2001 and 31 were acquired since the team's third title in 2004, showing Scott's uncanny ability to build a consistent winner. His Patriots teams have won a remarkable 14 playoff games since 2000, tying an NFL record for most playoff wins in a decade. In addition to his impressive resume, Scott is a person of high integrity and above all, a family man. He and his wife, Dallas, who is here today, have a five-year old daughter Mia, and we were very excited to have them as part of the Chiefs family. Without further ado, it is my pleasure to introduce you to the next general manager of the Kansas City Chiefs, Scott Pioli."

Patriots Owner Kraft Hated To Lose Pioli
14-Jan-2009, Kansas City Star
"New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft made it perfectly clear. He did not want to lose Scott Pioli. But with coach Bill Belichick being all things football in New England, there was little room at the top of the organization for Pioli. So after nine years with the Patriots, including the last seven as the club's vice president/ player personnel, Pioli accepted the position of general manager of the Chiefs, with Kraft's blessing. 'I had preferred he stay with us,' Kraft said in a telephone interview. 'But at the same time, I realized he was ready to be the No. 1 football person in an organization, and he couldn't be that here.'"

Statement From Patriots Head Coach Bill Belichick on Scott Pioli
"To sum up in words everything Scott Pioli has meant to this organization and to me personally would be difficult, if not impossible. From the day I met him, he has demonstrated a passion for football and respect for the game that is second to none. It has been extremely gratifying for me to follow Scott's career ascension from the bottom of the totem pole in Cleveland to his place as a pillar of championship teams in New England. Now with the opportunity to steer his own ship and a vision of building a winner, there is no more capable, hardworking, loyal, team-oriented person than Scott Pioli. On a personal level, the Belichick-Pioli bond runs far deeper than our workplace, as we and our families have shared countless memories away from football. Working side by side with one of my best friends for almost two decades is special enough in itself. But to help each other achieve success beyond our dreams is a blessing and something I will always remember and appreciate." |

Statement From Patriots Chairman & CEO Robert Kraft on Scott Pioli
"Scott Pioli was an integral part of the many championships the New England Patriots have celebrated this decade and I would like to thank him for his countless contributions throughout the past nine seasons. Scott is a great evaluator of talent. He is thorough in his evaluations, extremely organized and has done a tremendous job mining all possible resources to help Coach Belichick and his staff field the players needed to win consistently. He has played an important role in building a championship tradition with players that I am proud to call Patriots. On behalf of the entire Patriots organization, I wish Scott continued success in his new role and offer best wishes to his wonderful wife Dallas, and their beautiful daughter Mia. I think Clark Hunt and the Kansas City Chiefs have made a very wise hire." |

Chiefs' New GM Pioli Has Been Preparing For This Moment
13-Jan-2009, Kansas City Star
"Mahoney says now that he knew Pioli was destined for big things, but the coach also wasn't ready to turn loose of his best recruiter. Pioli was Mahoney's bulldog. They'd ride together on recruiting trips, Pioli filling Mahoney in on prospects' most closely guarded secrets – information that can be the difference between a commitment and a snub; information that Pioli seemed to have a knack for delivering. If the player didn't want to leave his girlfriend, Pioli knew it. If the mother worried about her son leaving home, Pioli knew it. By the time they opened the car door, Mahoney knew what he'd have to say to steer the player toward Murray State. 'That's what a good assistant does,' Mahoney says now. 'We got a lot of good kids back then.' Mahoney said Pioli's work ethic and networking helped him stand out. Building relationships always seemed natural for Pioli, a skill his high school coaches say made him a natural leader. 'He was a team man,' says Ray Ruckdeschel, Pioli's line coach at Washingtonville Central High in southeast New York."

Pioli Has Right Work Ethic To Start Chiefs Rebuilding Job
13-Jan-2009, KansasCity.com
"For nine years in New England, Pioli carried the same unexceptional title: vice president of player personnel. In fact, there was no 'of' in the title. Just: vice president – player personnel. And the Patriots never did have an official 'President – Player Personnel.' Pioli, of course, played a much bigger role in the Patriots' three Super Bowl victories and perfect 16-0 regular season than the understated title would suggest. He was, essentially, the general manager. He was the man who coach and guru Bill Belichick worked with most closely. But the low-key title does tell you something. It tells you that after 20 years of the Kansas City Chiefs being run by a President/ CEO/ General Manager, things might get just a little bit less pretentious around here."

The Perfect Pairing: A Look Back at the Partnership That Made the Patriots Great
13-Jan-2009, WEEI.com
"I don't think it's an exaggeration to say the Pats have just experienced the breakup of the greatest coach-personnel director pairing of this generation. Pioli was Belichick's first hire after taking over in New England in 2000, and the program they inherited was a mess. Two years later, they had their first title. Nine seasons later, their trophy case shows three championships, six division titles, the NFL's only 16-0 record and the best winning percentage in all of professional sports since 2001. Pioli rewrote the Pats' scouting manual soon after taking the job back in 2000, and on the first page of the handbook he included a mission statement. It read: 'We want to build a big, strong, tough, smart, fast, disciplined football team that will consistently compete for a championship.' Nine years later, only two words apply: Mission accomplished."

New Chiefs General Manager Has Impressive Resume
13-Jan-2009, KansasCity.com
"From the start, a union between the Kansas City Chiefs and Scott Pioli made too much sense for it not to happen. The Chiefs needed a bright, young general manager to lead their return to glory, and on Tuesday, they made Pioli their choice. As New England's vice president for player personnel, Pioli assisted coach Bill Belichick in crafting three Super Bowl championship teams and is considered one of his profession's rising stars. For their part, the Chiefs offered a situation with stable ownership and some good young players with which to build, making it attractive to someone looking for professional advancement."

Chiefs' Main Man?

"In the final home game of the Kansas City Chiefs' 2008 season, an announced crowd of 73,689 showed up at frigid Arrowhead Stadium despite the team's 2-12 record at the time. Some came with hand-written signs with a message for owner Clark Hunt: 'We want Pioli.' Lerner Defends Sequence Of Hiring

Sources Deny Reports That Demands By The New England Patriots' Scott Pioli To The Cleveland Browns Were Excessive
08-Jan-2009, Plain Dealer
"Reports that Patriots vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli turned the Browns off with his 'outrageous demands' were absolutely false, multiple sources close to the situation told The Plain Dealer on Wednesday. Browns owner Randy Lerner spent about 10 hours talking to Pioli over the past week and the dialogue was positive, the source said. It was also described by one source as more 'exploratory' than actual negotiating. Lerner liked and admired Pioli, his first choice for a general manager, sources said. But Lerner decided early in the hiring process that the head coach was the more important hire."

Pioli Saga Drumming Up A Lot Of Speculation
07-Jan-2009, NFL.com
"The information from one day often has completely contradicted the information from another. It has been madness – the speculation, information and misinformation – surrounding one of the most secretive men in the sport. The reason it has stayed this way is that Pioli doesn't share his business with anybody, maybe not even his wife. People in the Patriots' organization have no idea what he's doing. Certainly, people outside the Patriots' organization have no idea what he's doing. But this much has been confirmed from multiple people who know Pioli: After all this speculation, after all this guessing, all three options still are in play..."

KC Is Perfect Place For Pioli
07-Jan-2009, Eagle-Tribune
"Upon hearing rumors he might be dealt to the 'dreaded' New York Yankees after the 1959 season, Roger Maris expressed trepidation. 'I don't know if I want to go to New York,' he told reporters. 'They'll have to pay me a lot more money because I like it here in Kansas City.' Well, Patriots general manager Scott Pioli may soon understand Maris' sentiment. In fact, Pioli may have the opportunity to get his cake and eat it, too. He has been offered one of the richest contracts ever for a football operations CEO and with the chance to reside in one of the most pleasant places in America, Kansas City. All that awaits, apparently, is his signature. Well, here's some cheap advice from one of the most cynical regions of the country: Sign it. That's right, it's time."

Pioli Runs Options
06-Jan-2009, Boston Globe
"When Pioli left his meeting with Browns owner Randy Lerner, the sides agreed that they'd revisit in about a week. That would give Pioli time to meet with the Kansas City Chiefs about running their football operation, assess all his options, and come to a decision as to what he'd like to do. At the same time, Lerner could continue his search and come to a better comfort level with his own analysis of the situation. Thus, some type of movement – one way or the other – should be coming within the next few days. As it stands, Pioli is weighing three options: the Browns, the Chiefs, and staying with the Patriots."

Chiefs Request Permission On Pioli
31-Dec-2008, Boston Globe
"Patriots Vice President of Player Personnel Scott Pioli is scheduled to interview with the Cleveland Browns today, and the process could move quickly due to the interest of a second team. In addition to the Browns, the Kansas City Chiefs have also officially asked for permission to speak with Pioli, according to an NFL source. With the Chiefs now officially putting their hat into the ring, it could lead to a situation in which the Browns put the full-court press on Pioli assuming their meeting with him goes well, and snow in the region does not alter itineraries."

Why Pioli-To-Browns Will Happen
30-Dec-2008, SI.com
"At this point, all we definitively know is Pioli, New England's vice president of player personnel, has been given permission by the Patriots to interview for the Browns GM job, and that Cleveland owner Randy Lerner has made landing Pioli his top, full-steam-ahead priority. Though a specific timetable for Pioli's interview with the Browns is not yet known, I'd say any minute now is a reasonably accurate window. And it won't take long for the two sides to strike a deal. In fact, if Pioli is not the Browns new decision-maker by the end of the week, I'd be shocked."

Crennel Out, Cowher Not Coming To Browns
29-Dec-2008, Associated Press
"[Cleveland Browns owner Randy] Lerner has been granted permission by New England to interview Scott Pioli, the Patriots' vice president of player personnel who helped assemble three Super Bowl winners as coach Bill Belichick's right-hand man. The 42-year-old Pioli began his NFL career in Cleveland as a pro personnel assistant under Belichick in 1992. He has worked his way up and is now regarded as one of the league's premier front-office executives. … Lerner did not know when he'll interview Pioli, who may be ready to step out of Belichick's shadow. 'He's very well trained,' Lerner said. 'I think he's got a very attractive football demeanor. It's the right time of life for him. He's a fundamentally good guy.'"

Prospect Of Running Another Club Growing On Pioli
24-Dec-2008, Pro Football Weekly
"Word we're hearing out of Foxborough is that V.P. of player personnel Scott Pioli could be nearing the end of his distinguished tenure atop the Patriots' personnel department. In his nine seasons with the club, New England has enjoyed staggering success in an era ruled by parity, winning the AFC East six times and bagging a trio of Super Bowl titles. So why would the 43-year-old Pioli, revered as one of the top personnel chiefs in the NFL in a seemingly ideal position, want to leave? For one thing, Pioli has failed to earn the respect he deserves for helping to build the Patriots into the NFL's most consistent winner, and those close to the team say he's finally ripe for departure."

Pioli A Candidate For GM Job In Detroit
21-Dec-2008, NFL.com
"For whatever reason, there has been a widely held perception that Pioli doesn't want to leave the incredibly successful partnership he has had with Bill Belichick in New England. However, from what I'm hearing, that's not the case. Pioli has been open to listen to what other teams might have to offer and, given the Patriots' dominance in this decade, should have had many of them pounding on his door. Yet, from what I understand, in Pioli's nine seasons with the Patriots, only two clubs have sought permission from the Patriots to interview Pioli for GM openings: the Giants and Seahawks. It also is my understanding that he turned down both teams. Maybe that has helped generate the assumption that Pioli is unavailable."

NFL Countdown: Sunday Headlines
21-Dec-2008, ESPN
Chris Berman: "A guy who's been very spiffy, Mort, is Scott Pioli. Very well-respected VP Player Personnel of the New England Patriots. His name comes up at this time of year. Should it?" Chris Mortensen: "Pioli's twice been an executive of the year. But the facts are the facts. Robert Kraft owns the Patriots and it belongs to Bill Belichick, who has control of all things football with the Patriots. But Pioli, you know, he's been content in that role for the Team of the Decade. But league sources say there are finally true indicators that Pioli will make himself available for hire as somebody's General Manager if the right job comes available. The Chiefs and Lions expect to hire a new GM, and there's some uncertainty with the 49ers. And one source says keep an eye on the Eagles. Even though nobody's expecting anything there, depending on how things finish, Jeff Lurie, a big fan of the Patriots and their success." Berman: "Absolutely. Everybody is." Lions Should Hand Control To Patriots' Pioli
21-Dec-2008, Grand Rapids Press
"The Lions should spare no expense in luring the three-time NFL executive of the year from the New England Patriots and handing him a set of keys to the front office. Make him CEO, president and general manager. He gets all of the same titles Matt Millen possessed. Except Pioli, vice president of player personnel of the Patriots, commands respect throughout the league for helping put together a winning team. It might be the right time for Pioli, 43, to get full control of an NFL franchise and escape the lingering shadow of Bill Belichick's omnipresent hoodie."

Getting To Know a GM: Scott Pioli
18-Dec-2008, Arrowhead Pride
"Those who are being patient with the rebuilding process are met with skeptics who say Miami and Atlanta turned it all around in one year. Enter Scott Pioli who is the son-in-law and former co-worker of Bill Parcells, the architect behind the rebuilding project in Miami. He was also the superior to Tom Dimitroff, the current GM of the Falcons. Some might say that Pioli's success is due more to the genius of Bill Belichick. However, one must only look to Tom Dimitroff's success to deny that claim. Dimitroff was further away from Belichick and is still successful. All of Pioli's attributes make him an attractive GM candidate and should be the Chiefs #1 target."

Pioli Or Someone Who Can Get Cowher Are Chiefs' Best Options
16-Dec-2008, Kansas City Star
"Put the right deal on the table and I think Pioli would bounce from New England. He's 43, a year younger than Clark Hunt. They could form the perfect football power couple. Pioli has a flawless resumé. The Patriots mastered the art of winning big while managing owner Robert Kraft's money conservatively. Unlike Peterson, the Pats routinely cut ties with expensive veterans right before they fall off a cliff production-wise. Pioli could walk into an ideal situation for a first-time general manager. The Chiefs are in the process of rebuilding with a head coach the owner respects but is not tied to. That means Pioli could arrive in Kansas City and spend an entire season evaluating while the league figures out where it's headed in terms of a new collective-bargaining agreement."

Hunt Looking For 'Shrewd Evaluator Of Football Talent' To Replace Peterson
15-Dec-2008, Kansas City Star
"Clark Hunt wouldn't identify any possible candidates to replace Carl Peterson as Chiefs general manager. Hunt, the Chiefs' chairman, did reveal a list of qualities he's looking for in Peterson's replacement. 'I want somebody who's a shrewd evaluator of football talent,' Hunt said. '(His) job will be 24/7 to think about the football team. That's the most important quality. Obviously I'm looking for a strong leader, a good communicator, preferably somebody who has experience in building a winning NFL team.' Though he was speaking generically, he could have been describing Scott Pioli, New England's vice president of player personnel. Pioli, 43, could wind up as Hunt's primary target."

Fans Have Had Enough
12-Dec-2008, WHAM
"Unless they are going to go way out of character and try to sign a dynamic player or two, the Bills only chance to win back the fans is to make major changes to the management team. That means hiring a general manager, who would then bring in a new head coach. All they have to do is look at what the Miami Dolphins have accomplished to see that it can be done. Why not call Scott Pioli from the Patriots and see if he is ready to come out from under Bill Belichick's shadow and run his own team. A good general manager or a good coach impacts all 53 members of the roster and the rest of the staff. A good player can not have that impact."

It's Time For The Yorks To Hire Scott Pioli As 49ers' President
12-Dec-2008, San Francisco Chronicle
"[I]t's time for Jed to lead the York family in taking the next step in transforming the 49ers from a has-been franchise with a case full of dusty Lombardi Trophies into a 21st century football operation that can compete and win in today's NFL. Hire a team president. … Look at the most successful NFL franchise this decade, the winner of three Super Bowl titles since 2002, for the answer. Scott Pioli, 43, the Patriots vice president of player personnel, should be the Yorks' choice. This is the man – perhaps the most impressive young executive in the NFL – with whom the Yorks should entrust their entire franchise. Let him run it his way."

Scott Pioli-to-Lions Bandwagon Gets Another Rider
05-Dec-2008, Detroit Free Press
"Forget cold and flu. It's Scott Pioli Fever season. Pioli is New England's vice president of player personnel, a miracle man who supposedly can save the Lions. It's the first name Fox NFL Insider Jay Glazer brought up when I asked him about a possible replacement the day after he broke the Matt Millen firing story. And now foxsports.com's Alex Marvez is the latest to throw Pioli's hat into the ring. … Pioli has shunned previous offers, but Marvez and others think he might like the challenge of the Lions and a chance to be the man if the price is right. Extremely right. More than Matt Millen's $5 million right."

Pioli Could Pull Pieces Together Quickly For Lions
04-Dec-2008, FOX Sports
"Pioli is worth the payoff. Just look at the Patriots' draft history, free-agent moves and trades since his arrival in 2000. No team could withstand all the injuries New England (7-5) has suffered the season and remain in playoff contention without outstanding depth. Pioli knows what type of talent fits in New England's offensive and defensive systems and steers Belichick toward it."

Lions Owner William Clay Ford's Choice Of GM Is Team's ... Chief Concern
01-Dec-2008, Detroit News
"'The No. 1 thing in Detroit is to get the right (executive) in place and to structure the personnel department. And then get the right coach to fit.' Among those known to have interest is Scott Pioli, vice president of player personnel for the Patriots. … Pioli, 43, has been the talent chief at New England since he and coach Bill Belichick arrived in 2000. Belichick had earlier hired Pioli as a pro personnel assistant at Cleveland in 1992 and later made him director of pro personnel when Belichick moved to the Jets. Various nationwide publications have named him NFL Executive of the Year 14 times in four years. It is understood he would consider a jump to the Lions because of better salary and the potential for maximum latitude."

A 4-Step Plan To Turn The Lions Around
30-Nov-2008, Detroit Free Press
"The answer isn't necessarily backing up a Brinks truck to Scott Pioli's front door or coaxing Bill Cowher away from the network broadcast studio. Pioli, New England's vice president of player personnel, remains every desperate Lions fan's greatest fantasy. Could the Lions lure him away from the Patriots, providing him the opportunity to shine on his own, far away from the dominating specter of Bill Belichick? Either Pioli or Cowher would excite the masses, instantly bringing credibility due to their name recognition and prior achievements. But oftentimes, the best choice is the guy initially greeted with a resounding 'Who?'"

Browns Need To Have Plan B
30-Nov-2008, Akron Beacon Journal
"There is the perception Pioli has no reason to leave New England, since the Patriots have made six playoff appearances and won three Super Bowls in his previous eight years. But under Belichick, Pioli is not allowed to speak publicly except at the Super Bowl and he has toiled in relative anonymity. He's been named the Pro Football Weekly/PFWA executive of the year twice (in 2003 and 2007) and was cited by other publications for the same award in 2001 and 2004. At age 43, Pioli is ready to step out from Belichick's shadow and into the spotlight."

My Choice For The Lions' Next GM? New England's Scott Pioli
21-Nov-2008, Detroit Free Press
"If I could choose one person to be the Lions' next general manager, it would be New England vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli, who has won three Super Bowls and several executive of the year honors. … Here's a sentence from Pioli's bio: 'Pioli's primary personnel objective is to build a team, not to simply collect individual talent.' Now that's a mission statement that was missing under Matt Millen."

Lions Should Look To The Patriots To Find The New King Of Their Jungle
18-Nov-2008, SI.com
"The reasons the Lions should set their sights on the Patriots' vice president of player personnel are at least three-fold: [1.] There's a recent historical example of why looking in the direction of New England for a hire to head your football operation is the smart way to go. Last offseason, Atlanta, a team in maybe more disarray than Detroit, named little-known Patriots director of college scouting Thomas Dimitroff its new general manager. … [2.] You win with superior personnel in the NFL, and nobody does consistently better on that front than New England's tandem of Bill Belichick and Pioli. They're not perfect, but they've had a ton more hits than misses in their Patriots tenure. … [3.] It can't possibly hurt that Pioli is the son-in-law of that master of the organizational turnaround, Bill Parcells."

Hiring Pats' Pioli Would Give Lions Instant Credibility
17-Nov-2008, Detroit News
"If owner William Clay Ford is interested in reshaping the Lions' front office after this season, he might have a chance to land a big-name executive with impeccable credentials who would give the franchise instant credibility. Scott Pioli, vice-president of player personnel for the three-time Super Bowl champion New England Patriots, might be interested in being a franchise's top executive under the right circumstances. The operative word is 'might' – no guarantees. But it would be worth a phone call, at the appropriate time, for Ford to find out if Pioli would consider running the Lions."
