  Bill Belichick Press Conference
25-Jan-2004, Super Bowl XXXVIII
"On behalf of the team and the organization it's an honor to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl this year. Watching the Carolina Panthers this year, I have tremendous respect for that organization, the coaching staff, the job that John Fox did and his players. This is an outstanding team that we are facing and we expect it to be the toughest game of the year, there's no doubt about that. They won three very important playoff games, a couple on the road against teams that are well coached, tough, against a couple of teams that we're familiar with. We just have a tremendous amount of respect for them. As far as our team goes, the only thing we are concerned about is our performance a week from tonight. We don't really care about what happened last week, the week before or any weeks before that. It really doesn't matter at this point. It just matters how well we prepare and how well we can play Sunday against the Carolina Panthers. That's really all we're focused on. It's kind of the mentality of our team, what our expectations are this week. We're excited to be here. We're looking forward to it and it's a business trip. We have a lot of work to do."

  Houston, The Patriots Have Arrived
25-Jan-2004, Patriots Football Weekly
"Bill Belichick is not the Godfather, but this week he'll be playing the role of Michael Corleone. His message: It's just business. While the Super Bowl hoopla rains down around his team, Belichick will continue to hammer home his message just as he always does. The hype hit full swing when the Patriots arrived at the Inter-Continental Hotel at 6 p.m. Central Time, as Belichick and six of his players walked off the team bus and into a hotel ballroom to meet with a sampling of the media throng that will gather in Space City this week."

"We felt right at home in the wind out there. It was good to be on the Rice campus. It took me back a little ways to the Cotton Bowl team. Looking at the names up there in the stadium—Frank Ryan, King Hill, two quarterbacks drafted from the same team in the same year. I don't know if that has happened in a while. It was good. We went through some situational stuff, cleaned up a few things we started on last week in New England and continued our preparations. Obviously we will take the day off tomorrow and hit it on Wednesday on kind of a regular season Wednesday type practice. We're getting settled. It's good to be down here. We've got a lot of work to do and we're chipping away at it. That's where we're at today."

No Time To Relax In Houston
26-Jan-2004, Associated Press
"Maybe it was the Texas weather, with temperatures rising into the low 70's with a stiff, warm breeze, but Patriots coach Bill Belichick appeared as relaxed as he has in some time after New England's first practice of Super Bowl week today at Rice University."

  Inside The Super Bowl
26-Jan-2004, Washington Times
"Coach Bill Belichick is seeking players who put football above all else, and he isn't concerned his low-key approach might cause New England to lose out on a coveted player. 'We've talked about that, and I've been down that road,' Belichick said yesterday. 'The fancy dinners, flashing a guy's name up on the scoreboard—'Joe Blow, No. 28'—if that's what it takes to get a guy here, I don't think that's what we're looking for. I don't think a guy's going to be happy here, to be honest. If you don't enjoy playing this game, if you're in it to enjoy the trappings of being an NFL player, then probably the New England Patriots are not the right team for you."

The Stars Come Out For Unique Salute
26-Jan-2004, Houston Chronicle
"At 8 o'clock tonight, the lights of Reliant Arena will dim, and 5,000 people will settle in for the first Olympic-style opening ceremony in the 38-year history of the Super Bowl. They will see coaches John Fox of the Carolina Panthers and Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots standing side by side, talking about Sunday's game for the NFL championship. They will watch as league commissioner Paul Tagliabue and former president George H.W. Bush raise the NFL flag to open Super Bowl week in Houston."

Houston Gives Super Salute To Sports Legends
27-Jan-2004, Houston Chronicle
"Nantz hoped that an opening ceremony could become a tradition at future Super Bowls. Tagliabue, hitting the right civic notes, said he wasn't sure it would work everywhere. 'This is terrific,' he said, 'a great way to kick off the week. Maybe the trick is that Houston is unique. I'm not sure it's something a lot of other communities can duplicate.' Nantz's original idea was to honor 38 stars during the week of the 38th Super Bowl. But the balloting done by media members who'd been in Houston at least 10 years finished with a four-way tie for the 38th spot."

On how he met Charles Barkley and their relationship: "I got to know him through Mike Fratello. When Mike was at the (Cleveland) Cavaliers and I was at the Browns, Charles and Mike had a relationship. I have always admired Barkley. I think he's a guy that's tremendously competitive, a really good team player and a really smart player. I know he's got a ton of talent, but I think he really understands the game and knows how to win. That really impressed me and in talking with him I feel even more strongly about that. He'd be a great tight end because he's tough, he's got awesome hands and he knows how to play the game. And in talking to him he comes right at you with football, 'What about this coach and what about that and I don't really understand that move,' he makes a good point on some of that stuff."

We've had great cooperation and everything seems well organized. Obviously we're getting down to work today in terms of our biggest work days of the week—the next couple of days. I think this will be pretty much of a normal Wednesday for us. We certainly have put in a lot of time on Carolina to this point, but we'll try to get back into a normal Wednesday, Thursday, Friday type of routine—as normal as it can be for a game like this. That's pretty much where we're at. We're going to work indoors today so that will be just a little bit of an adjustment for us."

"With New England set to face Carolina in Super Bowl XXXVIII, Bill Belichick is leading his team to the Super Bowl for the second time in three years. As he is being universally praised for the work he's done, I've had people from Cleveland ask me, 'Why is Bill Belichick such a good coach now when he wasn't with the Cleveland Browns?' I don't know if that's true. Belichick got the Browns to the playoffs one year, and they were one of the favorites among many prognosticators to do well the following season."

"It is the mystique surrounding the Pats, as much as their actual playing skills, that Delhomme will be up against. He's fighting history—the way Belichick confused the mighty Rams offense in Super Bowl XXXVI; the way he has neutralized two of the NFL's most prolific offenses in this season's playoffs. And Delhomme will be fighting the aura of Belichick's brilliant game-planning, especially considering he will have had two weeks to scheme."

We try to keep our celebrations until after the game when we win. That is when it is most important. During the course of our game and something spontaneous happens after a big play, that is great. "The Patriots' coach is a deep thinker and a virtual renaissance man compared with some of his self-important contemporaries.... He's got a variety of interests and uncommon intellectual curiosity. But he chooses to be careful with his words. He's a skull-imploding bore at the podium and his players are encouraged to follow the leader. There'll be no cocky Patriot quotes taped to the walls of the Panther locker room Sunday night. The Patriots speak in the image of their leader."

Vinatieri gave New England its second NFL championship in three seasons with a 41-yard field goal with four seconds left for a thrilling 32-29 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday night. Vinatieri earlier missed a field goal and had another one blocked. But as he did in 2002 when he kicked the winning field goal to beat St. Louis on the final play of the Super Bowl, he proved he is perhaps the NFL's best clutch kicker."

"Belichick's second win as a head coach puts him in a class with such luminaries as Vince Lombardi, Don Shula and, yes, even Belichick's longtime boss, Bill Parcells. Belichick also won two Super Bowls as the New York Giants' defensive coordinator under Parcells. Asked about his legacy, Belichick said, 'You win 15 in a row and then a Super Bowl championship, that's pretty good. I think it can be talked about up there with some of the other teams that have had good accomplishments. Right now, I'm still kind of on Cloud Nine. I don't know if I've had a really good chance to reflect on that. I'm just enjoying the moment,' the NFL Coach of the Year said. 'This will be an unforgettable season for me.'"

I'm especially glad to see Tom Brady. I'm trying to figure out what it's like to be around a real celebrity. (Laughter.) Bob Kraft is a owner who knows how to win. And congratulations on winning the Super Bowl. (Applause.) What I appreciate is the fact that in the contracts you sign with the players that you include a commitment to participate in at least 10 public service events each year. I appreciate the commitment. I also appreciate the players' commitment, as well. You've got a great head coach, obviously. You can't win Super Bowls 66 percent of the time in a three-year period unless you've got a great coach.
